News from Surin 2/13/11

Dear Praying Friends,

While you folks back home in the US are still experiencing winter time, this past week in Surin the northern winds stopped, and we are back to good old hot weather. But believe me, I enjoyed every bit of January's cooler weather this year. Saturday evening we even had an unseasonably hard rainstorm that knocked out our electricity for a time.

Around season-changing times here is when all the cold viruses seem to hit. Kathi and I have avoided the bug so far, but we would ask you to pray for our church family as many are sick and this one seems to linger on and on with a cough that lasts even longer. Pastor Supap has the virus and was a real trooper making it through our early morning Khmer service. He had a surgical mask over his mouth and nose all day except for while he was preaching. We have a pastor and his missionary daughter coming for a visit this week, so I do not need this virus as I will have a lot of miles to drive.

I guess the fighting on our Surin/Cambodian border has made the news back home. Thousands of scared villagers have been displaced for a while and there have been several deaths all due to an ancient temple area along our southeast border. Both sides are stubbornly claiming possession of this World Heritage sight. From time to time we like to send information to help you clearly see the different worldview of our people, and today I have copied an article from the Bangkok Post newspaper for you about the General in charge of our Thai

troops. He happens to be a disciple of one of Surin's former foremost monks; and he believes in the powers of the Khmer's black magic so he is equipping his Thai soldiers with magic amulets to counter the strong Khmer powers. They are totally attuned to satanic spiritual powers while closing their minds to the power of God. Why? Because it's a "white man's religion".

Serving in Surin,

Jim & Kathi Hayes
